It
is illegal to dispose of used oil in sewers, storm drains,
waterways, on the ground or in the trash. Used oil can contain
harmful contaminants that can work their way into our ground
and surface waters and cause serious pollution. Just one gallon
of used oil can contaminate a million gallons of drinking
water.
In order to reduce the amount of illegal disposal,
Used Oil Collection Centers have
been set up throughout the County. You can help by following
these tips:
- Drain your used oil in a clean container;
- Do not mix any other materials, including
water, with used oil;
- Take your used oil and filter to a Used
Oil
Collection Center for recycling; and
- Take your empty containers home with you
to use the next time you change your oil.
County residents can recycle uncontaminated
used motor oil at any of the County-sponsored Used Oil Collection
Centers. Up to 20 gallons, in containers holding no more than
5 gallons, can be brought per day. Please see the attendant
on site for disposal instruc- tions. State Certified Collection
Centers will pay 4¢ per quart of oil. Many Centers also
accept used oil filters, automotive batteries and antifreeze. |
